We all have been there, 12th about to end, and the pressure of what to choose running around your mind. I was one such student who had just finished schooling and now stood in front of a long road waiting to be explored. Being a science student, I had plans to pursue medicine but my heart desired something more, something that demanded thrill, and a lot to learn with plenty of mysteries undiscovered. Soon, I realized that Forensic Science was the field I needed, so without any second thoughts, I jumped in towards a road not taken and joined the university that offered this course.
So, what was it that got my attention? Well, it was the definition that caught my attention, the definition stated that “Forensic Science is a field that is an integration of various sciences that is used to assist the police in solving crimes by scientific means.” Apart from the definition, the scientific temperament it possessed and the ability to make science work in solving a crime landed me in this field. This was the turning point in my life, I was fascinated by how one can learn so much from this field, from learning mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics to subjects like anthropology, entomology, serology, toxicology and so much more than one cannot imagine.
When I was exposed to so many other fields I felt like the “jack of all trades” who can interpret any condition of crime presented and help ensure that law and order are maintained. Since this was a road that was not much taken, apart from theory lessons it had a lot more, like going for autopsy visits, investigating mock crime scenes, and even working with other private and government bodies of forensic science to enhance oneself with both knowledge and skills. The part that I loved the most in this field was its vast opportunity for multidisciplinary research and development, these all aspects of the field kept me so busy that I was always digging in to learn and discover something new.
As this field is not fully established in India, every day is a new challenge, it demands constant hard work if one needs to get through every obstacle. A large number of international conferences and national conferences are also held frequently in this field so that experts and students can interact and exchange ideas.
The field of Forensic Science is thrilling and it requires people willing to face setbacks and passion that drives you high to become a person that does not only possess knowledge of interdisciplinary subjects but also the required skills that can help serve the society.
Forensic Science is not a field, it is a contribution towards the world by the early forefathers to minimize crime in the society and also to promote scientific thinking and knowledge in the society.
Great going, Prashant! Incredibly well written and insightful.
